Toiteach a Dhà means means Smoky Two in Gaelic. It’s the sequel to the peaty Bunnahabhain Toiteach which was launched in 2007. It’s meant to be smokier than other Bunnas (around 40 ppm), and richer because there are 75% sherry casks in the mix, alongside 25% bourbon casks. It appears to be close to 10 years of age, but that’s based on hearsay.
Bunnahabhain Toiteach A Dhà (46,3%, OB 2019)
Nose: dry smoke and cold ashes indeed. Not a peat bomb but nonetheless showing scorched grass, a bit of rubber, crushed peppercorns and oak char. Lifted by some lemon zest. There’s some orange peel and cinnamon in the background, as well as walnuts. The sherry is subtle and overall it feels a little young.
Mouth: smoky, oily and peppery. Still a bit youngish with a slight alcoholic touch and simple, sweet pear drops and cooked apple, but it gains complexity with wood spice, mint, ginger, chocolate and oranges. Lightly sweet after a while, but not showing the usual sherry richness. Subtle tobacco and salty sea breeze. Faint hints of cocoa towards the end.
Finish: medium, with citrusy notes, dry earthy smoke and a sudden flash of coffee beans.
This is more peated than sherried, but it works out nicely. The classic Bunnahabhain spirit gained punchy spice and a certain sherry dryness which combine nicely. Given the low price, this NAS expression offers decent complexity and really good value for money. An interesting option for those looking for Islay whisky on a budget.
