The Whisky Exchange released a limited edition for Father’s Day. This is supposed to be the present that your dad really wants, a blended malt whisky with limited details. A nice idea, in line with their Christmas Whisky or Black Friday deals.
It is a marriage of Speyside and Highland single malts. According to the TWE website, it even contains rare old single malts we won’t have access to again.
Dad’s Dram – Blended Malt (56%, The Whisky Exchange 2024, 963 btl.)
Nose: plenty of juicy pears, tart gooseberries and green apples. Bourbonny oak brings along some ginger and white pepper. Hints of cake dough. Then also mild baking spice and sweet mint. Even a mild whiff of Clynelish-y minerals. Easy pleasures, fairly mild but showing a nice brightness.
Mouth: quite a bit sweeter now. Hints of baked apple, lemon candy, poached pears and hints of candy floss. The sweet-and-sour juiciness is excellent. Lemon zest. After that it turns towards vanilla custard, apple pastry and caramelized almond. Then some old-style hay and polished wood.
Finish: medium, with more apple sweetness, some greener touches and mild oak.
We won’t make a guess here, although we suspect it’s a combination of a youngish component with something of considerable age. In short, a juicy dram with no sharp edges and a few interesting retro touches. Good value: this will work as a daily sipper, especially if your dad has a more experienced palate.
